Five Bold(ish) Predictions for the 2026 NBA Offseason

Just like that, the 2026 NBA season is officially over.
The New York Knicks are NBA champions after taking down the San Antonio Spurs in five games, and winning the franchise's first title in 53 years.
Now the attention shifts from celebrating the Knicks to figuring out which of the other 29 teams will be the one to knock them off the throne next season.
If the Knicks' championship run taught us anything, it's that aggressive roster building still matters. Their title was built through trades and free agency signings. Because of that, I expect a pretty active offseason around the league in terms of transactions.
With that in mind, here are five bold(ish) predictions for the summer.
1. Giannis Antetokounmpo Traded to Boston in Three-Team Trade Sending Jaylen Brown to Portland

After years of speculation, it appears this is finally the summer that Giannis Antetokounmpo gets moved out of Milwaukee.
My prediction is that he lands with the Boston Celtics.
The framework would likely involve a three-team trade with Jaylen Brown heading elsewhere, and I think the most logical destination would be the Portland Trail Blazers.
Everything we've heard suggests Giannis wants to compete for championships with a historic franchise and is exactly Boston that.
Pairing him with Jayson Tatum would instantly create one of the best duos in basketball and would give Giannis his best chance at ring #2 in years.
As for Brown, it feels like trade rumours have followed him throughout his entire Celtics career. Even after winning a championship and Finals MVP in 2024, his name has never really disappeared from the rumour mill.
Brown just had the best season of his career while carrying the Celtics for much of the year with Tatum sidelined. He's already won a title in Boston. Maybe this becomes the moment where he wants an opportunity to lead his own team.
From Boston's perspective, Giannis would also help diversify an offense that has become heavily dependent on three-point shooting. The Celtics can still contend immediately while adding one of the most dominant interior forces in basketball.
For Milwaukee, rerouting Brown to Portland could help them recover future assets, especially considering the Blazers control several of the Bucks' draft picks from the Damian Lillard trade.
Add in young players and draft capital, and suddenly a deal starts making a lot of sense for everyone involved.
2. LeBron James Signs With Golden State

As someone whose favourite athlete ever is LeBron James, this isn't necessarily something that I want him to do.
But I think it's what will happen.
I don't believe LeBron returns to the Lakers.
Ever since the arrival of Luka Dončić, it has felt like the organization is preparing for LeBron to hand over the reigns. They want the franchise to become Luka's team, and that's completely understandable.
Reports have suggested over the last couple of days that LeBron's agent Rich Paul will seek a max-level contract for LeBron and I have a hard time seeing the Lakers agreeing to that.
Instead, I think both sides move on.
That opens the door for the Golden State Warriors.
The rumours have already started circulating, and from a basketball perspective, it's easy to see why people want it to happen. Seeing LeBron and Stephen Curry play together for an entire season would be one of the coolest storylines the league has ever seen.
Would they be old? Absolutely.
Would I pick them to win a championship? Probably not.
But if you told me a team led by LeBron and Curry won a title, I certainly wouldn't be shocked.
It would be a new challenge for LeBron and would allow him to finish his career alongside his peers which I think is something he does.
James heads to the Bay this summer.
3. The Top Three Picks Go Exactly Like This

My prediction for the top three selections in the 2026 NBA Draft go as followed:
AJ Dybantsa — Washington Wizards
Cameron Boozer — Utah Jazz
Darryn Peterson — Memphis Grizzlies
Dybantsa going first overall feels almost locked in at this point. Pairing him with Trae Young and Anthony Davis would give Washington a real chance to make the playoffs next season and interesting foundation to work with going forward.
The draft really starts at No. 2.
Most people currently expect Peterson to go there, but I think the Jazz take Boozer instead.
There have been enough questions surrounding Peterson's season at Kansas that I could see Utah becoming hesitant. Meanwhile, Boozer feels like the type of player Danny Ainge would be extremely comfortable selecting.
Is Peterson potentially the more talented prospect?
No doubt.
But I think Utah opts for the safer route while Memphis selects Peterson at No. 3.
4. Ja Morant Gets Traded to Minnesota

Speaking of the Grizzlies, let's get into what feels like their obvious move of the summer.
They will be trading Ja Morant.
And I think when they do, Minnesota makes so much sense as his landing spot.
the Timberwolves have made deep playoff runs before, but the pressure is starting to build.
The Western Conference isn't getting easier.
The Oklahoma City Thunder are loaded. The Spurs just made the Finals.
Meanwhile, Minnesota's supporting cast around Anthony Edwards isn't getting any younger.
That's why I think they make a desperation swing.
I don't think Memphis would receive a massive return. At this point, it feels like both sides could benefit from a fresh start.
For the Timberwolves, Morant represents the ultimate buy-low opportunity.
A backcourt featuring Morant and Edwards would be absolutely ridiculous from an athletic standpoint and more importantly, it would take some of the offensive burden off Edwards while giving Minnesota another star capable of changing games.
It's a risk, but it's exactly the type of risky move teams take when they feel their championship window tightening.
5. Zion Williamson Finally Escapes New Orleans

I've been saying this for years but I think this is finally the offseason where Zion Williamson gets traded.
I still believe Zion can be an elite NBA player.
I just don't believe it will happen in New Orleans.
The relationship feels stale. And it's just time for both sides to move.
It's just crazy that somehow, after being drafted first overall in 2019, Zion still hasn't appeared in a playoff game.
At some point, both sides have to acknowledge that a fresh start is the best solution.
I could see him fitting with the Phoenix Suns alongside Devin Booker. The Detroit Pistons with Cade Cunningham would be interesting. Portland could be another possibility.
Honestly, I don't even care where he lands.
I just want to see him somewhere that either keeps him accountable or allows him to focus on basketball without being the face of an entire franchise.
