As a lifelong Montreal Canadiens fan, there have been plenty of players who have captured my heart, and I will forever be fans of them. However, there have also been a few who have me crazy throughout the years. Here’s a look at some Canadiens players I couldn't stand during their time in Montreal.
Scott Gomez (2009-2012):
This list isn't in any order, except when it comes to Scott Gomez who is by far my least favorite Montreal Canadien of the last 20 years. This doesn't even have anything to do with his massive contract, it has to do with that he was useless on the ice. This guy somehow went 370 days without scoring a goal! Yes, you read that correctly, 370.
I still cannot believe we gave up Ryan McDonagh for him.
Jonathan Drouin (2017-2023):
When the Habs acquired Drouin in 2017 I was so excited, the Frenchmen was coming home. Unfortunately, that excitement quickly turned into frustration with Drouin as he was so inconsistent in Montreal and always left the fanbase wanting more, especially after the team gave up defenseman Mikhail Sergachev for him. Although I cannot blame it all on Drouin has he did deal with mental health struggles during his time with the team which was a key factor to his demise in Montreal.
David Desharnais (2009-2017)
Do you want to know a key reason why the Habs were so close for years but never got over the hump? It probably was because they consistently gave David Desharnias top-six minutes, which was troublesome as he did not contribute anything offensively. Sure, he played well with Max Pacioretty, but maybe if the team found Pacioretty a better playmaker we could have seen the former captain be a consistent 40-goal scorer in Montreal.
Mike Condon (2015-16):
Do you remember when the Canadiens started 9-0-0 in 2015? I didn't think so, a lot of that has to do with Mike Condon. When Carey Price got injured early in that season, the team trusted Condon to keep the team afloat until Price was healthy enough to return. Sadly, with Condon in the net, the season quickly became a disaster as Condon couldn't save beach ball in Montreal.
Karl Alzner (2017-2020):
I don't think the Habs have had a worse signing than Alzner over the last 20 years.
He was just slow and overpaid, it's not that complicated.
