Before I go on, let me preface this with two things.
First, I was not a massive Post Malone fan before this album. Over the years, he did have some songs that I found enjoyable, the one I can specifically recall being Sunflower.
Second, before F-1 Trillion, I was not a country music fan, like at all. It's not that I didn't understand why some people enjoy it, the genre was never for me.
With those two things in mind, why am I so moved by a country album from Post Malone of all people? Well, I think I have figured it out, and it may be deeper than I originally believed.
Sure the music is catchy, which means you can dance to most of them pretty easily without it coming across as forced, and the star-studded collabs on the album are great.
Although those things are great, it doesn't make an album special, especially in today's music industry. Every week we get catchy music and songs with features that bring our favourite artists together.
In my opinion, what I believe is so special about this album, is its risk.
In F-1 Trillion, Post Malone leaps into an entirely different genre of music than he is used to. I mean, I cannot recall in my lifetime when a rapper/hip-hop artist just decided he was going to drop a country music album, let alone it being a success.
Another risk on the album is how the music sounds, Posty isn't just trying to do an impersonation of popular country artists from over the years. Instead, he has brought his experience from performing other types of music which gives his "country songs" a unique taste that brings in elements from other genres of music.
The songs simply sound different than a lot of music we get today, and I can always appreciate taking a risk by trying to be different.
Lastly, personally, the thing I appreciate the most about this album is how vulnerable and open Post comes across with the songs on F-1 Trillion. Country music has always been a way for artists to tell stories but the way Post Malone can share his emotions and feelings about his past, as well as his future is beautiful.
For example, the song if you have a Dry Eye after listening to the song Yours, supposedly a track for his two-year-old daughter and how he has already had thoughts about her getting married. Or the song Missin' You Like This, another track that is an emotional story from Post featuring Luke Combs.
Even if we do not think about the same things as what the songs are speaking about, there is a way we can all somehow relate to the lyrics throughout the albums. As you've probably heard a thousand times, even if we are not all fighting the same specific battles, we all do struggle with something.
What an album, and I may just be at the concert in Vancouver.
P.S. Anyone who rides in my car for the next couple of weeks, get ready to hear this album on repeat.
