I Guarantee You Had a Better Weekend Than Kevin Durant

So over the weekend, it was NBA All-Star Weekend, and going into the events, I was skeptical. As you all know, I’ve written multiple pieces about how I disagree with how Adam Silver is running the NBA, but I have to give him credit. All-Star Weekend this year, aside from the dunk contest, I do think was good. This new format was good. It was competitive, and it looked like the superstars actually gave a crap, which was good for a change. So overall, it was a pretty good weekend for the entire NBA... Aside from Kevin Durant.

After replying to tweets from fans who were simply complaining about how the NBA changed some award trophies, Durant got into one of the many Twitter scraps he’s had before with fans and it appears those fans were not happy with him, as it was revealed once again that Durant’s burner accounts most likely had been exposed, which isn’t anything shocking based on the past. Durant has been caught using burner accounts before, and he’s been openly arguing with fans on Twitter for years, but this time it was a bit different, as he was criticizing current teammates and former teammates in ways that are very tough to come back from.

So how do we know this is Durant to begin with? Well, one of the accounts was titled @gethigher77, and it was created in August 2021. Around that same time frame in 2021, the cover photo for that account was an owl photo that Kevin Durant had posted on his main account that year.

These leaked posts showed allegedly Durant saying that Kyrie Irving couldn't compete with him, and he called Russell Westbrook a “triple-double cocaine bear,” just as some examples of him criticizing his former teammates. He also said that he tried to challenge Steph Curry and keep him accountable when he was with the Warriors, and that everyone looked at him like he was crazy for doing so.

More examples of criticizing former teammates is when he allegedly said that when he was with the Suns, Devin Booker and the former head coach, Frank Vogel ran a dictatorship.

Looking at some of the criticism he had for his teammates now, he mentioned Alperen Şengün that can’t defend or shoot and also talked about Jabari Smith. Keep in mind, ever since Durant got to Houston last summer, Smith has spoken openly about how much he looks up to Durant and how much he wants to gain knowledge from him during their time together as teammates. Durant said that Smith may be "mentally challenged" but in a more direct way.

So yeah... If this is true, not a great weekend or look for Durant. That became even clearer when looking at every video we saw of him at the game yesterday. He looked like he was in panic mode, constantly on his phone and visibly stressed out.

It will be very interesting to see how Durant moves forward from here. I’ve already been pretty down on the Houston Rockets heading into the season. A lot of people have them as a serious championship contender, but I predicted them to be the seventh seed in the Western Conference and they lately have not been playing great basketball over the past couple of months.

This is going to be a very interesting storyline to watch if true, which at this point it most likely looks to be. A lot of the evidence is piling up in that direction.

Durant is now facing just another chapter in a very complicated legacy. It will be interesting to see how both he and the Rockets try to repair this relationship going forward, as well as how his reputation around the league is affected, because this is very damaging for a guy that everyone generally seems to like. There’s no doubt that he’s going to have to make amends for a lot of this and I am fascinated to see how this plays out.
