Jaxon Smith-Njigba Is Already the Greatest Seattle Seahawk of All Time

The Seattle Seahawks' 2026 season has not gone the way many fans expected.
After losing just three games all of last season and ultimately winning the Super Bowl, expectations entering this year were understandably sky-high. However, halfway through the season, Seattle sits at 4-4 and have not looked like the dominant team many expected going into the season.
Injuries have certainly started to take their toll, but they do not explain everything. The Seahawks have simply not been a sharp team, and for much of the season, they have not been especially enjoyable to watch for us fans.
Of course, the defense has still been excellent as head coach Mike Macdonald continues to have that unit playing at an extremely high level, and Seattle's defense has often been the reason the team remains competitive.
Most of my frustration is about the offense, which has been a completely different story.
Quarterback Sam Darnold has been AWFUL this year, throwing an interception in every full game he has played; there has been very little flow or consistency. New offensive coordinator Brian Fleury should have already fired, as he has not schemed anything up to help run the football to take some of the burden off Darnold, pass protection has been an issue, and all of this has made the offense borderline unwatchable on many occasions.
But there has been one major reason to keep watching every week: Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Coming off an Offensive Player of the Year season in which he established himself as one of the best wide receivers in football, Smith-Njigba has somehow taken his game to another level in 2026.
Through eight games, JSN already has damn near 1000 receiving yards (985) on 64 receptions and 9 touchdowns.
At this point, I do not think there is much of an argument to be had, Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the best wide receiver in the NFL.
He is once again the favourite to win Offensive Player of the Year and would be the third player ever to win that award in back-to-back years, he seems to find the end zone every week, and has become the only true offensive weapon opposing teams consistently need to game plan around. When teams play Seattle, every defensive coordinator knows where the football is going, and he is still nearly impossible to stop.
Smith-Njigba can beat defenses at every level of the field. He can win underneath, dominate on intermediate routes, and beat defenders deep. Regardless of the coverage or the situation, he consistently finds ways to make plays.
As a Seahawks fan, I can honestly say he is the most entertaining player I have ever watched.
That is an incredible statement considering the amount of talent that has played in Seattle throughout the franchise's history, but watching Smith-Njigba every week feels different. He is the one player on this struggling offense who can make something happen at any moment, and over the last two seasons, he has repeatedly put the offense on his back.
Which brings me to a statement that might sound bold.
I think that Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the greatest Seattle Seahawk of all time.
Again, this is saying something as Seattle has no shortage of legendary players.
Russell Wilson, at his peak, was one of the best quarterbacks of the 21st century. Although his time in Seattle did not end particularly well, there is no denying what he accomplished with the franchise. He helped bring Seattle its first Super Bowl championship and was one of the defining players of the Seahawks' most successful era.
Running back Shaun Alexander won an NFL MVP in 2005 and was one of the most dominant offensive players in the league during his prime and was helped out by having who many consider to be the greatest Hawk ever in Walter Jones blocking for him on the offensive line.
Marshawn Lynch became one of the most iconic and dynamic running backs in football and played a massive role in defining the identity of the Seahawks during the Legion of Boom era.
Going further back, Steve Largent remains one of the greatest players in franchise history and one of the most important receivers of his generation.
Defensively, Seattle has produced some of the greatest players in NFL history. Of course, there was Cortez Kennedy in the 90s, but during the franchise's most successful era, Bobby Wagner, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, and Kam Chancellor were all defining members of one of the most dominant defenses in modern NFL history with the Legion of Boom.
There are plenty of names that deserve to be part of this conversation.
But when I look at what Jaxon Smith-Njigba has already accomplished and what he appears capable of becoming, I believe his case is already incredibly strong to considered the GOAT Seahawk.
Smith-Njigba is only in his fourth NFL season, yet he has already accomplished things that many great players never do.
He has delivered a Super Bowl championship to Seattle. He was the best player on that championship team, and he has continued to build on his success since then.
He is also locked into Seattle's future and appears destined to own multiple franchise records by the time his career is over.
More importantly, he has established himself as the best player at his position in the NFL.
In my opinion, that is no longer up for debate.
When you combine his individual dominance with his team success, his importance to the current Seahawks and the trajectory of his career, the argument becomes increasingly difficult to say otherwise.
This is not simply about projecting what he could become someday. Smith-Njigba has already accomplished enough to be included among the greatest players in franchise history, and he is only getting started.
I expect him to continue improving, and based on what we have seen over the past two years, there is no reason to believe his current level of dominance is going away anytime soon.
Week after week, he continues to carry an enormous responsibility for this football team, and if that level of play continues, the records will come. The accolades will come. More opportunities to compete for championships will hopefully come as well.
And eventually, I believe the conversation about the greatest player in Seahawks history will no longer be much of a conversation.
If he stopped playing today, I would already have him at the top of my list.
If his career continues on its current trajectory, I believe that eventually will simply become common knowledge among Seahawks fans.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba is not just building a case to become the greatest Seahawk of all time, but in my opinion, he already is.
